MatE 100: Materials for Emerging Technologies
Thursday and Friday, March 26 and 27, 2009
Registration is now closed. Please look for an email by Sept. 4th indicating your acceptance into the course.
Choosing your major is one of the most important decisions you will make during your college career. Is Materials Engineering the major for you?
To help you find out, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is offering a 2-day, 2-credit elective.
Materials for Emerging Technologies will cover a wide range of topics, providing a comprehensive overview of the importance of materials in engineering and society and how they will be important in the future. Hands-on laboratory sessions are integrated with lectures on bio- and nanotechnology, materials for energy production, sustainable materials, and more! You will learn the various types of materials and their properties, how they’re made, what they’re used for, and how to test and characterize them.
You will have opportunities to observe how some materials are produced, tested, and studied. You will also gain an appreciation of the key steps involved in the manufacture of a specific article, covering its design concept, material selection, fabrication, and performance in use. Laboratories and demonstrations will show you state-of-the-art materials research and development and the advanced instruments and equipment used.
