Preventative Maintenance
On this page, you'll find instructions on how to install and configure some common Windows security software. Please read the instructions carefully! Remember: a byte of prevention is worth gigs of cure.
Software
Windows Update
- In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Microsoft (Windows) Update.
- If you are asked to update the Windows Update software, follow the steps to do so.
- Click 'Express', and then 'Install Updates' when prompted to do so.
- If you are asked to restart your computer, please save your open documents, close active programs, and restart your computer.
Symantec Antivirus
- Download Symantec Antivirus from our Software page
- Click on "SAV.EXE" to download the file to your desktop.
- Once the download is complete, run the file. The default location is fine. Simply click "Unzip".
- Go into the newly created SAV folder, and run "Setup.exe".
- Follow the prompts, accepting the default settings.
- Once installed, SAV will perform a LiveUpdate.
- Because virii have a lifespan of only a few days, it's important to set the LiveUpdate to update every day, instead of the default settings of once a week. Double-click on the shield in the system tray (down by the clock). This will bring up Symantec Antivirus. Click "File", "Schedule Updates". Click "Schedule", and choose "Daily" under Frequency. Click "OK", "OK", and "Exit".
- Enjoy.
Microsoft Windows Defender
- Download Windows Defender from our Software page
- Once you've downloaded WindowsDefender.msi, run the file. Follow the prompts: Click "Next", "I accept...", "Next".
- If you're concerned about privacy, choose "Install definition updates only". If you don't mind letting Microsoft know how you handle your spyware, choose "Use recommended settings". Then, click "Next".
- Choose "Complete", and click "Next". Finally, click "Install". You may be asked to exit some programs that are running, such as Outlook. This is normal.
- Once the installer is complete, leave "Check for updated definitions..." checked, and choose "Finish". Defender will open, download updated definitions, and run a quick scan.
- Enjoy.
- Useful: Under Tools, choose Software Explorer. You have the option (under Category) to see:
- A list of all programs that are starting up when you boot your computer
- A list of all currently running programs
- A list of all currently running programs that are connected to the network
