Jesula Jean-Charles

What is your name? Jesula Jean-Charles
What school are you currently attending? Temple University
What year will you be starting in the fall? Senior Year as a Biology major
Why did you choose to attend the SENSORS program? I wanted to find more about sensors; quite frankly before the program I was not too sure what sensors were and their importance to our society. Another reason why I chose to attend the program is because it seemed like a great opportunity to get familiar with doing research. So far, it has been a great experience.
Who are you working with, and what research are you doing? I’m working in Dr. Layton’s lab; Kate Allen is my mentor. We are working on finding the mechanical properties of neuron cells. We are growing nerve cells in parallel lines then using the microbeam array by placing it on the nerve cells and pulling the microbeam array. We then measure the deflection of the microbeam. By applying force, the microbeam array will deflect and from that we can measure the stiffness of the cell.
What are your goals/aspirations for the future? I’m still struggling with what exactly I want to do in the future. I’m still deciding whether I should further my studies as a biologist or go to Dental School. Either way, I will be attending graduate school in the fall of 2008.
