Interview

Q: What is your name?
A: Dewi Harjanto

Q: What school are you currently attending?
A: Franklin W. Olin College Of Engineering

Q: What year will you be starting in the fall?
A: Senior

Q: Why did you choose to attend the DREAM program?
A: The research project, the location, the perks (housing, money, etc.)

Q: Who are you working with, and what research are you doing?
A: I’m working in Anthony Lowman’s lab, under the supervision of Ph.D. student, Vanessa Vardon. I'm working on drug delivery of a chemotherapeutic to the spinal cord using drug-loaded electrospun nanofibers made from a degradable polymer (PLGA), embedded in a nondegradable hydrogel (PVA) that would potentially serve as a scaffold for tissue growth. I'm going to get to electrospin those fibers and work out a standard curve for the drug release (or actually the release of coumarin-6, which is this fluorescent chemical of similar solubility that's going to model the more expensive drug) using the UV-VIS spectrophotometer.

Q: What are your goals/aspirations for the future?
A: I want to go to graduate school and earn a Ph.D. in biomaterials. After that, I hope to conduct research for a medical devices company.
