| Details: | The Glass & Optical Materials Division (GOMD) of The American Ceramic Society invites nominations for the Cooper Scholars Award. This undergraduate award is named in honor of the late Professor Alfred R. Cooper, Jr., member of the faculty at Case Western Reserve University and a prominent contributor to the understanding of many glass phenomena and glass problems.
The purpose of the Cooper Scholars Award is to encourage and recognize undergraduate students who have demonstrated excellence in research in glass science or technology.
The award will be presented during the GOMD Cooper Session at MS&T in October 2009 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
How to submit nominations: the nomination package can be submitted by the undergraduate student candidate and/or by the faculty advisor or other research mentor and should consist of the three documents listed below.
Information to be submitted:
1. A nomination letter from the faculty advisor and/or other research/development mentor for the project describing the role, contributions, and strengths of the student.
2. A five page report written by the student describing:
- The cover page will provide the project title and student contact information
- Two pages can be used for technical description of the project
* The technical problem being solved or research project being undertaken
* The methods used to solve the problem or conduct the research
* The results obtained from the study
* An analysis of the results in terms of the goals of the project
* A description of future work to continue and expand the project
- One page can be used for figures, which must be publication quality
- One page can be used for citations to provide bibliographic information
3. A two page essay written by the student describing:
- What was learned scientifically from the project
- What he/she enjoyed most about the project
- His/her future plans
Only one nomination will be accepted per institution. |

| Details: | The purpose of the award is to recognize truly outstanding work and creativity in teaching, in directing student research, or in the general educational process (lectures, publications, etc.) of ceramic educators.
Any interested individual or group may nominate a person. A personal history and three-page description of teaching efforts and consequences of this work will be used for the judging.
The suggested three-page description might include descriptions of typical ceramic courses taught, course evaluation data, descriptions of courses or labs developed by the individual, data on number of these supervised, a publication list highlighting books, reviews, or tutorial articles, descriptions of educational programs developed, and educational service within the broader ceramics community. Attachments might include letters of support by colleagues and current or former students.
A committee made up of the two immediate past recipients of the award and the current President-elect of the Ceramic Educational Council, who will act as chairman of the committee, will select the winner. |

MTI will be partnering with the NACE Foundation to promote, award and administer the scholarship. The NACE Foundation will provide these services to MTI at no cost and a majority of the selection committee will be MTI members. The winner will be recognized both at the NACE annual meeting and at the June MTI meeting. We plan to award the first scholarship in the spring of 2008.
