Department Receives REU Site Award from NSF

A proposal submitted by Dr. Surya Kalidindi (PI) and Dr. Antonios Zavaliangos (co-PI) to NSF has been selected for funding. The proposal entitled, "DREAM: Drexel Research Experience in Advanced Materials" is for an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) Site and will receive $334,071 over a three year period. The project will bring 10 students annually from peer institutions to spend 10 weeks in the summer in our laboratories gaining research experience in the areas of nanotechnology, biotechnology, and the design and processing of advanced materials. Caroline Schauer (MSE), Jonathan Spanier (MSE), Yury Gogotsi (MSE), Christopher Li (MSE), Wei-Heng Shih (MSE), Michele Marcolongo (MSE), Steve Wrenn (Chem. Eng.), Richard Cairncross (Chem. Eng.), Tony Lowman (Chem. Eng.), Karl Sohlberg (Chemistry) and Valarie Arms (English and Philosophy) will all serve as senior investigators and collaborators on this project. Dorilona Rose, program coordinator in MSE, helped tremendously in putting this proposal together. The acronym DREAM was coined by one of our newest faculty members, Caroline Schauer.
