Members of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering were honored for their achievements and service to the Liberty Bell Chapter of ASM International on Thursday night, May 19, 2005 at the chapter's Awards and Past Chairmen's Night held at Williamson's Restaurant in Willow Grove.
B.S./M.S. students Stephen Niezgoda (advisor: Dr. Richard Knight) and Anthony Coratolo (advisors: Dr. Nina Orlovskaya and Dr. Surya Kalidindi) were awarded the A. W. (Doc) Grosvenor Scholarship and Joseph J. Weisser Memorial Scholarship respectively, valued at $1,500 each. These recipients, together with one student from Villanova University, were selected from a pool of 15 applications, five each from Drexel, the University of Pennsylvania, and Villanova.
In addition, Ph.D. student Elizabeth Hoffman (advisor: Dr. Michel Barsoum) received the 2005 Young Member Award for significant contributions to the Liberty Bell Chapter. Liz has been instrumental in promoting materials science and engineering to high school students. For his contributions to the society and the chapter, Material Advantage faculty advisor Dr. Richard Knight received a silver key ring as a 15 year membership/service award. Dr. Knight was also honored with the chapter's 2005 "President's Award" for service to the chapter.
