Assistant professor Dr. Jonathan Spanier has been appointed to serve as the Department of Materials Science and Engineering interim associate department head for the 2006-2007 academic year while associate department head Dr. Antonios Zavaliangos is on sabbatical leave.
Spanier joined the department in 2003. During his first three years as a member of MSE, Dr. Spanier has received funding as either a PI or Co-I for research and instrument acquisition funding from DoD (ARO), NSF, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and educational funding from the Department of Education. In 2004, he was awarded the Army Research Office Young Investigator Award. He is a senior investigator and funded member of the Nano-Bio Interface Center (NBIC), an NSF-Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC) based at the University of Pennsylvania, and has received an Innovation Grant from the NBIC.
In addition to his tenure-track appointment in the department and this interim position, Spanier is a Co-Director of the University-wide A. J. Drexel Nanotechnology Institute (DNI). In this capacity, he provides oversight for development activities for the DNI. Additionally, he is an affiliated faculty member in the Departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics.
