The November 3, 2006 issue of Drexel University's student newspaper, The Triangle, features several mentions of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
The cover has an article about Drexel Smart House, an initiative spearheaded by MSE's B.S./Ph.D. student Jameson Detweiler (advisor: Yury Gogotsi). Drexel Smart House is "a multidisciplinary group of students working to construct an urban home to serve as a 'living laboratory.'" The group is exploring the many facets of home living and researching different ways of looking at efficiency, health, entertainment, and other technological issues to improve home life. The group is applying for funding from the EPA.
Dr. Christopher Li is mentioned in an article on page 5 about his recent receipt of the Bradley Stoughton Award for Young Teachers from ASM International.
The work of Drs. Yury Gogotsi, Gleb Yushin, Michel Barsoum, and recent Ph.D. graduate Elizabeth Hoffman on carbide-derived carbons for treating sepsis appears in the Science and Technology section.
A recent cell phone contest, the Micron Mobile Theater Contest, sponsored by the Micron Corporation was also featured in the Science and Technology section. Drexel University was chosen as only one of two schools to host the contest, to showcase the technology behind the Micron imagers in four different types of cell phones.
