Dr. Yury Gogotsi (Senior Scientist), Trustee Chair Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Vadym Mochalin (Co-PI), Senior Research Associate, are part of a team of Drexel researchers who have received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI) for "GOALI/Collaborative Research: Functionalized Nanodiamond Reinforced Biopolymers for Microporous Surgical Fixation Devices."
PI of this initiative is Dr. Jack Zhou of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics. Dr. Peter I. Lelkes of the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems serves as Co-PI along with Mochalin. Qingwei Zhang, post-doctoral researcher in Biomedical Science at the Drexel University College of Medicine, is also part of the team.
Drexel is the lead institution of this collaborative research project with industrial partner Arthrex Inc. and university collaborator Georgia Institute of Technology. The objective of this research is to explore new composite nano-manufacturing methods to enhance mechanical integrity of biopolymers using functionalized nanodiamond and to investigate a new micro porous structure which will assist in bioactive reagent delivery in surgical devices. The budget for this 3-year project is $568,090 with Drexel receiving $418,090.
