Professor Michel Barsoum, A. W. Grosvenor Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has received $125,000 for one-year from the National Science Foundation Division of Materials Research for "Understanding and Recreation of a 4500 Year Old Reconstituted Limestone."
With this grant, Barsoum will continue his research into evidence that many of the blocks used to build the pyramids were cast rather than carved. Pyramid samples will be studied using carbon dating to provide a date for the casting of these stones. Barsoum's group will also look to reverse engineer the cast stones and plan to build a sample pyramid on campus.
