Professor Richard "Dick" Heckel (1943-2010), professor in Drexel's MSE department from 1963 to 1971, passed away on May 25, 2010 following a battle with cancer.
After his time at Drexel, Heckel went on to serve as department head of the Department of Materials Science at Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) from 1971 to 1976. He spent the remainder of his academic career at Michigan Tech, where he retired in 1996.
Upon retirement, Heckel founded and directed Engineering Trends, a company that collects and analyzes statistical information on higher education
Heckel received all of his degrees (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.) from CMU's Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He was a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, a Commission-At-Large of the Engineering Workforce Commission, Life Member of The Mineral Metals and Material Society (TMS), and a Fellow, Life Member, and recipient of the Bradley Stoughton Young Teacher of Metallurgy Award at ASM International.
Heckel was a great friend to our department and will be missed.
