Professor Mitra Taheri, Hoeganaes Assistant Professor of Metallurgy in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), is the recipient of two new grants.
"Multiscale Correlation of Magnetism and Microstructure at Iron/Oxide Interfaces" is a three-year, $290,268 grant from the National Science Foundation. Co-PI on the grant is MSE assistant professor Steven May.
In this project, candidate oxide coatings for iron powder-based electromagnetic devices, prepared by molecular beam epitaxy, will be identified by investigating the magnetic and structural properties of oxide-Fe interfaces in the form of thin film heterostructures. The work funded by this grant addresses known hurdles within existing industrial production environments and is strategically targeted towards next generation materials and processing necessary for the future direction of electromagnetic devices, in particular applications for the automotive, wind, aerospace, and industrial sectors.
In addition, Taheri is PI on a $299,486 grant from the Department of Energy, "Instrumentation for Research and Education in Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Materials Science: Quantifying Radiation Damage and Detection in Reactor Materials." Co-PIs include MSE A. W. Grosvenor Professor Michel Barsoum and adjunct professor Christopher Peters of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
A major portion of the proposed work is to use the requested in situ microscopy tools to study microstructural stability of various nuclear reactor materials, such as stainless steels for current Light Water Reactors, and new high temperature metal alloys and MAX-phase ceramics for Generation IV nuclear reactors. Also the grant will provide funds to purchase high resolution gamma spectroscopy equipment to support research and educational functions.
