A proposal submitted by a team of researchers from Drexel University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the University of Pennsylvania has been selected for funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to investigate new electronic devices based on the coupling of electronic and structural phase transitions in oxide materials.
The team consists of four professors from Drexel's Department of Materials Science and Engineering - Drs. Steven May (lead PI), James Rondinelli, Jonathan Spanier, and Mitra Taheri - who are joined by Dr. Andrew Rappe from the University of Pennsylvania. Total funding for the four year project, "Vertical charge ordering transistors enabled by structurally coupled heterointerfaces," is $2,200,000 with Drexel receiving ~$1,750,000 of these funds. The project will begin in the summer of 2011.
The shrinking of silicon transistors has led to a rapid increase in computing power and device portability, which has fundamentally altered modern life. However, physical limitations on the present technology mandate that transistors with fundamentally different operating principles be developed if improvements to computational performance are to continue. By bringing together researchers with expertise in computational materials design (Rondinelli, Rappe), materials synthesis (May, Spanier), and materials and device characterization (Taheri, Spanier, May), the project aims to develop a new form of transistor that is faster and consumes less power than conventional electronics. If successful, the project could lead to computers and cell phones with increased functionality and decreased power consumption.
