Dr. Doherty joined the Department of Materials Engineering at Drexel in 1982, served as Interim Department Head from 1998 to 2000, and was appointed A. W.Grosvenor Professor in 2003. During his time at Drexel, he has consulted extensively, most notably for Alcoa Technical Center on Processing Aluminum alloys from 1982 until 2006. His research has centered on the mechanisms of and resulting microstructures produced by the industrial processing of metallic alloys. He has advised or co-advised over 30 doctoral students and published over 200 research papers.
