Professor Mira Olson of the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering and Caroline Schauer from MSE along with collaborators at Johns Hopkins University, have received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for their project  "Investigation of Chemotaxis in Porous Media: Visualization Experiments and Modeling."This project develops a labeled micromodel for simultaneous visualization of bacterial and chemical distributions in heterogeneous media and applies Lattice-Boltzmann modeling techniques to quantify bacterial chemotaxis in soil. The Drexel portion of the two-year project budget is $255,000. Read More »

Dr. Ulrike Wegst (PI), Dr. Caroline Schauer (co-PI) of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), College of Engineering and, Dr. Peter Lelkes (co-PI), of the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems have received a new NSF grant entitled, "Mineralized Electrospun Chitosan Nanofibers as Bone Scaffolds". The aim of the project is to test the hypothesis that by mineralizing chitosan fibers, a ceramic-based bone substitute material can be created for low and medium load-bearing applications that combines the strength and stiffness of the ceramic phase with an increased toughness through fiber reinforcement. The long-term goal is to provide materials for optimal repair of craniofacial and orthopedic skeletal defects, which would otherwise require a bone graft from a second surgical site. The budget for this two-year project is $315,297.

Funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) (Public Law 111-5), the NSF-Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site SENSORS: From Design to Implementation (EEC-0851796) has been renewed for another three years.

The program, directed by MSE assistant professor Caroline Schauer (PI) and Civil Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) assistant professor Jin Wen (Co-PI), will receive funding in the amount of $300,000.
