City, Country abroad
Milan, Italy and Madrid, Spain
Reason that brought you abroad in the first place
I’ve always wanted to see the world and figured this would be the best way to do it. When I went to an information session for the EAGLES program, I was sold. I get to learn from professors at top universities in Italy and Spain, finishing my course requirements and thesis research while I’m abroad. The best part is, when I get back to the US I will graduate with two degrees from Drexel and one from Politecnico di Milano.
Favorite place to go outside of work/the lab
I like an area of Milan called Porta Genova. It really comes alive at night with a younger crowd. There are loads of bars with great happy hours, which here means buying a drink for 7-10 euro and getting a buffet of different kinds of food with it. On free afternoons, it’s nice to just walk around the city. Milan is a big place, so I’m always discovering new things when I go on a stroll without a destination.
When I started having second thoughts about leaving, I consulted one of my favorite fortune cookie quotes: “May your faith always exceed your fears – no price is too great to go through life afraid.” My apprehensions were quickly dissolved when I arrived and got settled in. I feel that Drexel has really prepared me for the classes I’m taking here, which are second year Master’s classes. I think this program is completely cohesive with Drexel’s Materials program and I know it’s going to be a great and rewarding experience. I’m meeting great people and seeing beautiful places, doing so many things I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.
