How did you decide to come to Drexel Materials for your B.S.?
Coming into college, I wanted to investigate the different areas of engineering before I decided on my field, so I came into Drexel as Undecided Engineering. I registered for the Materials Two-Day Course on a whim after hearing it described at orientation and, because of it, I found myself very interested in Materials. When, after hearing about all of the engineering departments in Engineering 101, I still found Materials to be the coolest, I nailed it down as my major and have lived happily ever after ever since.
Are you doing any research in the lab? If so, please list your advisor and describe.
I have worked on several research projects at Drexel under Dr. Michel Barsoum: testing of an environmentally friendly recycled slag-based cement; nanoindentation of layered materials and single- and polycrystal oxides; and development of a new 2D material called MXene derived from MAX phase, a cross between metals and ceramics, with Drs. Barsoum and Gogotsi.
What other activities are you involved in at Drexel?
Beyond academics, I have two Performing Arts scholarships for choir and theater, so I have participated in Naturally Sharp (Drexel’s vocal jazz group), Chamber Singers, University Singers, and in four Drexel Players productions so far.
What do you like best about Drexel Materials?
I like the size of the department. We’re small enough that we all know each other and the staff knows each of us well, but large enough to have awesome research opportunities for undergraduates as well as graduates.
What are your plans post-graduation?
I have not yet decided whether I want to go into industry with my master’s or to go after my doctorate, possibly abroad, and co-op will help inform me on that decision.
How do you feel your Drexel Materials degree will prepare you for your post-graduation plans?
If I decide to go to industry, co-op will give me valuable experience as well as contacts in the industry. On the other hand, the research required for my thesis will prepare me for further education should I choose to pursue it.
Do you have any advice for students looking for a B.S. program?
I’d say, first look for schools with strong programs in your area(s) of interest. Then go in and really explore the classes, professors, and opportunities available at each school and make an informed decision about what you want to do.
